The purpose of this project was to identify a written instruction set that would benefit
from the addition of technical instructions and added to the safer and easier project
completion. I selected an IKEA product to meet the 15-step instruction set with illustrations requirement. This specific set was 17- completion steps
in order to have flexi
bility with the written directions. My team partner
and I divided the deliverables into one of us completing all deliverables while
the other conducted the usability testing. The project meets the following outcomes of
the program:
* Identify reader/user expectations
* Evaluate and use appropriate strategies for production and editing
* Analyzing, navigating, & synthesizing research data
This was the second-best project that I worked on during my UCCS tenure. I was able
to combine technical writing experience with usability design creation and fuse it with
the required objectives – research, user expectations and evaluation, and real-world
issue of terribly written instructions
.
One of the takeaways is that I know how to make documents more accessible for use because not everyone is able to decipher the meaning of diagram-only instructions. The other takeaway was realizing the importance of usability testing with technical instruction sets.
